North Carolina is an incorporated town located in central Jackson
County, in the Great Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina. The
town is named for William D. Sylva, a Danish handyman. Downtown
Sylva NC, a Main Street community, has many restaurants and shops along its
tree-lined streets. Recreational opportunities are numerous and diverse
including a town-owned pristine tract of land, Pinnacle
Park, that boasts hiking trails, waterfalls, and a view of Sylva from 5,000
feet. The Tuckaseigee River is known for its whitewater and trout
populations and is considered by some to have the best trout fishing in
North Carolina.

TREE WALK.
The 1.2-mile Sylva
Tree Walk is home to 44 of the more than 50 species in Sylva,
designated Tree City USA. Col. Theodore Fuller, local
author and artist, created the tree walk in 1981. The Sylva Garden
Club currently maintains the walk, which features a guide book,
map and small signs at the base of each tree indicating its common
name. The walk officially begins in the shade of Bicentennial Park
near the old courthouse, but folks are welcome to pick a parking
place and start at any point along the trail. Jackson County

 PINNACLE
PARK
is a former watershed
and now an 1100 acre park owned by the city of
Sylva. The pinnacle is 5,008’ elevation and has
a spectacular panoramic view of Sylva and
surrounding areas. The park offers wonderful
hiking trails (moderate to difficult) that go by
streams, waterfalls, and beautiful vistas.
Location is approximately 10 minutes from
Sylva. Take Skyland Drive east (SR 1432) and
turn left onto Fisher Creek Road (SR
1446). Continue to the end of the road. |
