DABBERS.The Mud Dabbers' name was
inspired by the dirt dabbers, insects who build
their nests from mudThe smiling Mud Dabber logo, drawn by
son John at age 12, symbolizes the joy and
happiness the family hopes will be yours in the
sharing of their craft.
BREVARD
MUSIC CENTER. Each summer more than 400 students, ages 14
through post-college, join professional musicians to
eat, breathe and sleep music for seven weeks. In addition to a
rigorous schedule of instruction, students collaborate with faculty
and guest artists in more than eighty public performances.
THE
CRADLE OF FORESTRY OF AMERICA.
The Cradle is a place of people, nature history
and the future. The story of the birth of
forestry in America is told here through
exhibits, guided tours along
SLIDING
ROCK is a recreation area set up by the
US Forest Service. It's a 60' natural rock slide
with a 6-7 foot deep pool at the base.
Lifeguards and staff are on duty from Memorial
Day week end to Labor Day and there is a fee of
$1 per person to access the area, which is 7.5
miles north of Hwy 64 on Hwy 276. For more info,
call the US Forest Service at 828-877-3350. Kids
have to be a certain size to slide alone,
otherwise they can sit on the lap of an adult
and slide. Near
LOOKING GLASS FALLS. One of the
most well known and often-visited of
Transylvania county's falls is Looking Glass, a
handicapped-accessible 60-foot cascade located
next to U.S. 276. The name "Looking Glass" comes
from Looking Glass Rock, where water freezes on
its sides in the winter and then glistens in the
sunlight like a mirror or looking glass. The
falls are 60 feet tall and the area is
especially beautiful during the fall season.
THE HEART OF
BREVARD. The city's Main Street Program -
is a testament to the fact that this mountain
community works together to keep its downtown
revitalized and energized. When the program
began in 1993, there were thirteen vacant
buildings downtown. Today, the Heart of Brevard
is filled with active businesses and
professional offices; it is clean and green,
with lush trees and flowers flourishing on the
downtown streets
TRANSYLVANIA
HERITAGE MUSEUM. During the 125th
anniversary celebration of Transylvania County,
NC in 1986, hundreds of people signed a petition
encouraging the formation of a county museum.
The Jim Bob Tinsley Museum, a non-profit
organization, was opened in May 1994 in Brevard,
NC. In 2003 the Transylvania Heritage Coalition
(THC) was formed. The THM opened in May 2008. It
now houses temporary and permanent displays of
heirlooms, artifacts, genealogical exhibits,
vintage photographs, and other exhibits
reflective of the history and heritage of the
county.
