The Appalachian Trail from Hot Springs to Max Patch
Trail
A
portion of the Appalachian
Trail is located near Hot Springs, NC.
Parking is available at the Hostel Trailhead and at the Max Patch
Trailhead. The trail climbs south from the Hot Springs Hostel up
to Bluff Mountain on the N. Carolina / Tennessee border. Enroute
to Bluff is the Deer Park Shelter, just 3 miles south of Hot
Springs. The trail continues south, crossing a gravel road at
Garenflo Gap where a small parking area exists. Approximately 12.5
miles from Hot Springs is the Walnut Mountain Shelter. The Roaring
Fork shelter, just 0.3 miles south of Lemon Gap, was built in 1990
to replace the Walnut Mountain Shelter. The trail leads across the
Roaring Fork drainage and climbs up to Buckeye Ridge and Max Patch
Bald. The grassy ridges and blackberry slopes of Max Patch Bald
have been called the "Crown Jewel" of the Appalachian
Trail. Get

Hot Springs Mineral Water Spa
- Hot Springs mineral waters have been
famous since 1778 for relieving stress
and fatigue from the mind and body.
Today, there are Jacuzzi style hot tubs
built into attractive wooden decks with
the hot natural mineral water flowing
constantly to them from deep inside the
earth. 12 outdoor mineral baths ranging
from 100-104 degrees are available seven
days a week year round. Additional Spa
services include massage therapy, body
treatments and facials. |
Max Patch - The summit at Max
Patch provides an overwhelming 360
degree view - be sure to take the
camera. The well-maintain trail is about
9.5 round trip, 5.5 hours and moderate
difficulty. There is also a one mile
loop available by driving beyond the Max
Patch parking lot. Be sure to get
complete directions and information
before starting out. This is one of the
most remarkable spots in the NC
mountains and well worth the effort. |
