Spruce Pine NC: |
|
|
|
Spruce Pine North Carolina was founded in 1907 when the Clinchfield
Railroad made its way down the North Toe
River from Erwin, Tennessee |
|
Spruce Pine
is Mitchell County’s largest city of just over
2,000 people and sits poised along the North Toe River
* Spruce Pine was once referred to as “The Kim Thickets”,
after resident and axe handle and shovel maker Kim Mchone.
*Chartered in 1913, Spruce Pine was built around the Carolina,
Clinchfield and Ohio Railroad Depot.
*One of the first industries in Spruce Pine was the Harris Clay
& Mining Company. Employees of Harris Clay got paid in scrip
and used it to purchase goods in company stores. Today, mining has proven to
be the town’s economic mainstay. You’d be hard pressed to find
a geologist that has not heard of Spruce Pine NC.
*Spruce Pine has a more concentrated area of feldspar than any
other area on earth and accounts for 60% of the United States production
of the mineral.
*Nearly 100% of the United States and the world supply of ultra-pure
quartz, which is used in the manufacture of fused quartz apparatus used
in the production of semi-conductors, come from the Spruce Pine
area. If you have a computer you may rest assured the computer
chips were manufactured from Spruce Pine quartz.
*Spruce Pine offers the uniqueness of having not one but two
main streets, Upper Street (Oak Avenue) and Lower Street (Locust
Avenue). |

Spruce Pine NC was originally centered around a tavern operated by Isaac
English, located on an old roadway that ran from Cranberry NC down to Marion. The Old English Inn still stands at its original location near the center of
downtown Spruce Pine. Today, tourism has become a major economic force in Spruce Pine NC as well as in the region. The town's proximity to the Blue
Ridge Parkway, combined with its location near the edge of the Blue
Ridge Escarpment has helped make Spruce Pine a favored travel destination. |

Mount Mitchell State Park There are a few places in the world that still stand apart from the
ordinary. Rising more than a mile high, surrounded by the gentle mist of low-hanging
clouds, Mount Mitchell State Park is one of these extraordinary places. In the crest of the
Black Mountains lies the summit of Mount Mitchell,
the highest point east of the
Mississippi. Forested and forever misty, 1855 acre Mount Mitchell State Park will
provide you with some of the most tranquil moments you'll ever experience. |
The Blue Ridge Parkway - At 469 miles long the Parkway is the nation's longest scenic rural parkway. Now 70 years

Barking Spider Our pottery is made from our own specially formulated stoneware clay. All the
ingredients are naturally occurring minerals mined in the eastern United States. Our glazes
are made exclusively by us, having been developed after many years' research. |
Beecham White Glass Much of Gary Beecham's work has been heavily influenced by
ancient glass, both in form and in technique. The ancients treated glass as a plastic
gem material, a substance that could be colored, stretched, melted and carved by the maker. |
Cadell Studios
- I am interested in the figure and the spiritual being that is represented by it. I wish to
record the triumph of the human existence as I have observed it in the strong people who have
entered my life. Clay allows me the opportunity to form figures who sing of their past, and who
are witnesses of their history. |
Dianne Borde-Sutherland As a potter and painter, I find great expression
using the Maiolica glazing technique, which allows me to create strong forms with cheerful
and spontaneous surface design. My love of plants, gardens and the simple yet intricate
forms of nature inspire me. |
Jane Peiser I look back on 77 years of life on this amazing earth, 40 years in which it has been my privilege to earn a living making pottery. I feel a yearning for the
good side of human nature and when it appears in an occasional piece that I have made, it's a good, good, day in the studio. |
Rock Creek Pottery For us, pots are a vehicle for interaction.
Interaction between hands & mind, clay & fire, maker and user, food and dishes, sight and
touch. Pots begin with the potter in the tradition of making things with clay and finished by the choices the user. |
