Holiday events and special celebrations make your mountain time even more interesting and exciting. Peanuts characters come to life for Easter and Halloween excursions on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. Biltmore displays its "flower carpet" in spring and Candlelight Christmas events in December. July 4th fireworks light up the mountain skies from Lake Lure to Boone after picnics and family activities. Memorial Day Weekend offers fishing tournaments and outdoor fun for the entire family.
Nationally known festivals such as Merlefest and the Wooly Worm Festival draw 1000s of visitors every year.  The Southern Highland Craft Guild offers two annual 4 day craft fairs with 100s of exhibitors, heritage craft demonstrations and good old mountain music.
 
There are year around events held on the same day of each week as well as varying schedules each year. You can listen to the best in local music, see live theatre, attend art walks and show openings, buy produce and handmade goods from tailgate markets or participate in nature programs and hikes.

This Annual event offers eight full days of celebrating all things beer in Asheville NC. The week of events will include tastings, dinners, beer education, keynote speakers, and other beer-related fun (and nonsense). Asheville Beer Week culminates with Asheville’s Beer City Festival where dozens of breweries (and plenty of live music) are slated to appear on Roger McGuire Green.

  The event features exquisitely crafted gourd art. This year’s Cherokee Gourd Artists Gathering brings together collectors and exhibiting artists for a weekend of live demonstrations, classes, competitions and a spectacular art market offering stunning works of gourd art, materials, tools and supplies. Come see how an inexpensive, traditionally utilitarian component of the Cherokee household is transformed into a piece of artwork. Admission is free.

Event:     Flat Rock Playhouse presents: Clue the Musical    The internationally popular game is now a fun filled musical which brings the world’s best-known suspects to life and invites the audience to help solve the mystery: who killed Mr. Boddy, in what room and with what weapon. The audience receives forms to help them deduce the solution from clues given throughout the fun-filled evening. Three audience members choose from cards representing the potential murderers, weapons, and rooms; there are 216 possible solutions! Only one hard-nosed female detective is qualified to unravel the merry mayhem.

Event:    Brevard Blues and Barbeque Festival   The 3rd annual Brevard Blues and BBQ Festival. This year's  festival includes a lineup of national and regional touring blues acts, along with a “Backyard BBQ Competition” on Saturday. The competition will be a modified Kansas City Barbecue Society rule set-up with only wood or charcoal allowed. The competition will consist of shoulders, picnics, or butts to be judged by a panel of “celebrity” judges. Enjoy 8 different music acts over two days.

Meet some of Grady the Groundhog’s woodland friends or possibly the birds of prey, a Red-tailed hawk and Great Horned Owl. A Park naturalist will explain each animal’s role in our ecosystem, how they came to live at the park and lessons on what we can do to help protect wildlife. Animal Encounters meet at Grady’s Animal Discover Den Mon-Fri and at the Outdoor Classroom Sat & Sun. Afterward, grab a Track Trail brochure at Grady’s Den and take a hike along the Great Woodland Adventure trail with 12 interactive education stations.

The month is designed to bring together kids, parents and grandparents with 30 days of organized family activities and lodging specials. Naturalist Niche: Fall Creek Exploration    Hickory Nut Falls is one of the highest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. A common question from Park guests is “where does the water come from?” This hike offers the rare opportunity to explore the origination of the feeder creek, Fall Creek, and follow it as it leads to the upper cascades of this beautiful waterfall. This ride is a challenging to strenuous 100 mile bicycle ride, starting and ending at the Valle Crucis Elementary School, approximately 5 miles south of Boone, NC. The route roughly circles Boone through the outskirts of Watauga County, the heart of North Carolina's High Country. The terrain is constantly changing with hills of all lengths and curves too numerous to count. Highlight of the route include 21 miles on the Blue Ridge Parkway, a strenuous climb over the 4500 foot gap at Snake Mountain and a 10 mile "flat" on old U.S. 421.

Event:     Annual Singing on the Mountain  at Grandfather Mountain.  Thousands gather annually for this all-day outdoor gospel sing and fellowship opportunity. Music from top gospel groups begins at 8:30 AM, and many families bring lawn chairs and picnics to enjoy the event. Camping (without RV hookups) is available on the field on a first come, first served basis. The event is free according to the longstanding motto: "Whosoever will may come."

The resort towns of Banner Elk and Beech Mountain, located high in the Blue Ridge Mountains, have combined forces on a five-day extravaganza to celebrate our nation's independence. The centerpieces of this fun-filled weekend are Beech Mountain's Fireworks and 47th Annual Roasting of the Hog on Saturday (July 1) and Banner Elk's Fourth of July Parade and Party in the Park on Tuesday (July 4). The parade heads down Main Street and ends with a Party in the Park. Live  bands perform at various spots throughout the weekend and Banner Elk hosts an arts and crafts show all four days. Other options include Lees-McRae summer theatre and scenic chairlift rides to the skybar on Beech Mountain.
