Holiday events and special celebrations make your mountain time even more interesting and exciting. Peanuts characters come to life for Easter and Halloween excursions on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. Biltmore displays its "flower carpet" in spring and Candlelight Christmas events in December. July 4th fireworks light up the mountain skies from Lake Lure to Boone after picnics and family activities. Memorial Day Weekend offers fishing tournaments and outdoor fun for the entire family.
Nationally known festivals such as Merlefest and the Wooly Worm Festival draw 1000s of visitors every year.  The Southern Highland Craft Guild offers two annual 4 day craft fairs with 100s of exhibitors, heritage craft demonstrations and good old mountain music.
There are year around events held on the same day of each week as well as varying schedules each year. You can listen to the best in local music, see live theatre, attend art walks and show openings, buy produce and handmade goods from tailgate markets or participate in nature programs and hikes.

WNC Pottery Festival  This event showcases the work of more than 40 highly skilled potters from 13 states. This popular annual event takes place form 1 PM to at the John C. Campbell Folk School, and features some of the finest artist-blacksmith work as well as other unique, handcrafted items. Tryon Beer Fest - Tap into Tryon     Held from noon until 6 PM  in the Tryon Depot Plaza. Enjoy a variety of the finest craft beers from around the country, including some local ones. The first, largest, and most walkable tour of working artists' studios in the region, the River Arts District Studio Stroll takes place in 19 historic buildings along the French Broad River. Event:    Veteran's Day Celebration
   The parade begins at 10:00 AM in downtown Columbus, starting on Mills Street (108). There will be a short Memorial Service at 11:00 AM with a wreath laying ceremony and dove release. Spectators are requested to wear red, white and blue and wave their American flags. (there will be hand flags passed out at the parade). Veterans may wear their uniforms and awards and, if desired, join their branch of service comrades in the Staging Area and march in the parade. Bleachers will be available for disabled vets who are unable to march.

The Tour embarks from Biltmore Village on a festive 75 minute trip through the lights and sights of the season. Annually, Historic Downtown North Wilkesboro kicks off the Holiday Season with the lighting ceremony soon after dusk. Main Street is filled with the lights, joys, smells, and sounds of Christmas. Event:     Winter Lights at The North Carolina Arboretum   
Winter Lights is a three-acre nightly walking tour of The North Carolina Arboretum's nationally-known gardens, including its Quilt Garden and Bonsai Exhibition Garden. Celebrate the holidays and discover the natural beauty of western North Carolina through lighted garden exhibits and landscapes. The 2015/2016 Winter Lights exhibit will also include animated displays that are programmed to illuminate to the sounds of musical holiday favorites. Event:     Turkey Strut 5K Walk/Run    This year, the event will benefit the Cherokee Braves Booster Club, a community organization that supports all athletes of Cherokee Central Schools by organizing team and school events, coordinating athletic programs, and raising monies to support our local athletes. Event:     Annual Holiday Parade
   The Holiday parade begins at 3 PM followed by the 1st Annual Light up the Town event starting around 5:30 PM. The Downtown will be lit at dusk with lighted displays and decorations. Businesses will be all decked out for the Holiday season many  will also have extended hours to start your Holiday shopping early. Food specials and live music at will be offered by downtown restaurants. Visit stores for chances to win prizes. End your evening at the WJ Methodist Church Hensley Hall for Coffee House Live with great entertainment and refreshments beginning at 7:30 PM.

Event:     Asheville Holiday Parade  
The Annual Asheville Holiday Parade, presented by Bojangles, rolls through downtown Asheville beginning at 11 AM. The parade starts on Biltmore Avenue near South Charlotte Street, makes a left on Patton Avenue, and ends at French Broad Avenue.  This year's parade features nearly 100 entries including marching bands, dance and cheer squads, nonprofits and businesses. Bojangles will have food and beverages available for sale along the parade route.

Event:     19th Century Carolina Christmas at the Smith-McDowell House  
Asheville's oldest surviving dwelling is now a National Register property and a window into how life was lived here in the 19th century. Celebrate Christmas the old-fashioned way. The Smith-McDowell House Museum's timeline of authentically decorated period rooms showcases the evolution of Christmas celebrations and decorations. This yearly exhibit, began in 1981, is a tradition for many regional families and tour groups. The mansion and local history museum will again be authentically decorated with fresh trees, garlands, ornaments and toys of the Victorian Period.

  Chimney Rock State Park has incredible Animal Educators to help spread the word on the important roles they play in our ecosystem. Join one of the Park naturalists for an informal program where your family will love meeting some of the wilder teammates! Kids of all ages are sure to take home some fun facts and special memories. Then, grab a Track Trail brochure at the Animal Discovery Den and round out the day with a hike along our Great Woodland Adventure trail with 12 education stations. Don’t forget your camera!

Enjoy an evening stroll in downtown Brevard, NC as you explore the art galleries, art stores, retail stores and restaurants that are staying open late from 5-9 pm on the 4th Friday from April – November. (December Gallery Walk is held on the 3rd Friday due to the Holidays) Experience art, music and wine. Be sure to look for the animal sculptures and the murals located in downtown Brevard as well. Make an evening of it and stop by and have dinner in one of the downtown restaurants. Event:     Naturalist Niche: Ecology of Chimney Rock      
Of course, Chimney Rock is  known for amazing views, but some of the most incredible aspects of this area are often overlooked. Local naturalist Clint Calhoun has spent decades researching and studying what makes the ecology of Chimney Rock State Park and Hickory Nut Gorge so unique. Join him for this moderate hike to learn so much more about what makes our area so special. This hike is considered moderate. We love our visitor’s furry friends, but we do understand that some hike participants may consider animals a distraction on the trail. Pets are not allowed on Naturalist Niche hikes because of this. Hikes are geared for adults. Space is limited to 15.  Cost includes Park admission for the day.

Be present at 10:00 AM to watch the wood kiln be unloaded, and them make your selection. Items in the wood kiln will include work from Bolick’s and from Traditions. With face jugs such as Santas, wizards and cry babies, Rebekah pitchers, candlesticks, sculpted chickens and other traditional wares. Food will be served. Free admission.

   Main Street is closed to traffic so you can walk leisurely down the street and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and fresh baked cookies as you wait for the for the lighting of the Town Christmas tree located in front of the United Methodist Church. Santa and all his helpers will be there to meet with kids to hear their wish list.

  This is the 7th annual Holiday Market at the Buckeye Recreation Center held from 9 AM - 3 PM. Musicians and storytellers, crafts and sing-a-longs, hot cider and cookies. This FREE festive celebration will honor Carl Sandburg and his family holiday traditions. The house will be decorated in the simple style of the Sandburgs with poinsettias and a traditionally decorated Christmas tree throughout December until January 6th, 2017.

There is no admission charge to view the entries to the National Gingerbread House Competition. In addition to the gingerbread overload, see the beautiful holiday displays throughout and warm by the giant fireplaces in the grand lobby. Pick up a map in the lobby to find the various areas where the entries are displayed.
