Holiday events and special celebrations
make your mountain time even more interesting and
exciting. Peanuts characters come to life for Easter and
Halloween excursions on the Great Smoky Mountain
Railroad. Biltmore displays its "flower carpet" in
spring and Candlelight Christmas events in December.
July 4th fireworks light up the mountain skies from Lake
Lure to Boone after picnics and family activities.
Memorial Day Weekend offers fishing tournaments and
outdoor fun for the entire family. |

Nationally known
festivals such as Merlefest and the Wooly Worm Festival
draw 1000s of visitors every year. The Southern
Highland Craft Guild offers two annual 4 day craft fairs
with 100s of exhibitors, heritage craft demonstrations
and good old mountain music. |

There are year around
events held on the same day of each week as well as
varying schedules each year. You can listen to the best
in local music, see live theatre, attend art walks and
show openings, buy produce and handmade goods from
tailgate markets or participate in nature programs and
hikes. |

Patrick's Parade
Bagpipers, leprechauns and a sea of green will travel through downtown for Boone's third annual St. Patrick's Parade. Local businesses, organizations and marching bands will show off their Irish and mountain pride in one of the High Country’s premier events. Everyone is invited to stop by the Jones House lawn, where a free family-friendly Kids Zone will include inflatable bounce houses, balloon animals, magic shows, face painting, games and treats. Parade-goers are encouraged to hang around throughout the day for specials from businesses, restaurants and breweries. |

Fontana Trestle Train Ft. BBQ & Brews
The Barbeque and Brews
Dinner Trains feature locally hand-crafted beer from one of several
local brewing companies plus slow-cooked authentic North Carolina Barbeque.
The train departs Bryson City Depot at 7 PM and travels through the scenic mountain countryside to the Fontana Trestle for a spectacular sunset. The base ticket prices
vary and include a souvenir tasting glass with three beer samples and
your own basket of Southern-style
barbeque goodness with hand-pulled
pork slider, a couple pork ribs, and
chicken drumstick accompanied by
baked beans and house-made coleslaw.. Additional beer will be available for purchase.

Assault on Blackrock Trail running is extreme, and trail running in Sylva is no exception. How does running a seven-mile mountain trail race with 2,770 feet of elevation gain sound? Trail runners who compete in the Assault on BlackRock trail race will summit BlackRock at 5,810 feet - and that’s just the halfway point of the race. The trail race weaves through the spruce forests along the spine of the Plott Balsam Mountains on challenging gravel and dirt roads. The final summit comprises a 650 feet gain in 1/3 mile on the steep single track. |

Event: NRC Slalom US Open at the Nantahala Outdoor Center Elite slalom paddlers strive for precision and speed on the legendary Nantahala Falls course at this classic southeastern race. Meanwhile, wildwater racers compete in sprint and classic components on the Nantahala River.
Spectators are invited to enjoy the show from the Forest Service walkway along the Nantahala Falls, which affords excellent views of both races. |
