ALL YEAR. First Saturday The Surry Arts Council is pleased to present an old-time dance in the Old-Time Music Hall (below the Andy Griffith Museum in Mount Airy). There is a clogging workshop from 5:30 to 6:30 PM, free with purchase of a dance ticket. The dance starts at 7:00 pm and admission is $5
Blueridge Music Trails. The Blue Ridge Music Trails guides travelers to the many public settings in which Blue Ridge folk music and dance thrive today. The music venues selected for the Blue Ridge Music Trails have been identified by folklife fieldworkers. Though listeners may well hear an array of musical styles at a given event, each site includes a substantial amount of traditional Blue Ridge music performed by musicians native to the region. All of the events listed are on-going and are open to the public.

20   BURNSVILLE   Third Annual RiddleFest    The theme of this year’s RiddleFest will be a tribute to Mike Seeger who passed away in August 2009. The Traditional Voices Group produces and stages a musical tribute to Lesley Riddle the third Saturday of each February. This event is held in the Burnsville Town Center and presents some of the local talent of Yancey and Mitchell counties, including a number of Lesley’s relatives as well as relatives of the Carter Family.

3   DILLSBORO    Easter Hat Parade   Led by a fleet of restored antique cars, followed by the many hat contestants and featuring the Easter Bunny, the parade begins in front of the Town Hall on Front Street and makes two circles around the two-city-block area to make sure everyone gets a good look! Make a hat and come join the parade! Last-minute entrants very welcome.
4   ASHEVILLE    Biltmore Annual Easter Egg Hunt  The Easter Rabbit makes his annual appearance on Biltmore’s Front Lawn on Easter Sunday, along with special children’s entertainment including magic shows, music, storytelling, crafts and photos with the Easter Rabbit. Highlighting the day are the grand Easter Egg Hunts at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
4   CHIMNEY ROCK   55th Annual Easter Sunrise Service   Chimney Rock Park - Celebrate the glory of Easter as our guest at this inter-denominational community worship. This special service will be filled with song, scripture, special music and spectacular sunrise views over beautiful Lake Lure and Hickory Nut Gorge. 17   DILLSBORO  Appalachian Growers Market  A unique fair celebrating farmers and growers. There will be an open-air plant and produce market. Crafters and artisans will be demonstrating and selling. And there will be plenty of music, local food, beer and wine too. This all-day event is a fund-raiser for the Monteith Farmstead Restoration Project, our community effort to restore the historic Monteith farmhouse as the Appalchian Women's Museum and Monteith Community Park.

30 - May 2  13th Annual French Broad River Festival  This annual festival has grown steadily from a one night benefit party on the banks of the French Broad to an all weekend family festival featuring some of the best music in the area and a number of outdoor events in celebration of this beautiful river and setting. Festival begins at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Proceeds from the festival will be donated to American Whitewater and the new Hot Springs Community Learning Center.

1   RUTHERFORDTON    2010 Gears & Gables Cycling Event   The Fully-supported ride begins at 8:00 a.m. from historic downtown Rutherfordton. This one-day, multi-route event will encompass Rutherford County, All proceeds from the 2010 Gears & Gables ride benefit Rutherford Housing Partnership and its mission to provide low-income homeowners with urgent repairs imminent to life or safety.
1  BRYSON CITY  Horace Kephart Day   This event is designed to celebrate the contributions of Horace Kephart to the formation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and his regional literature. 22 -   SPINDALE (near Rutherfordton)  Spindale Dairy Goat Festival   The Spindale Dairy Goat Festival is in part a fund raiser for Heifer International; an organization that provides farm animals and the means to raise them as a source of income for impoverished families throughout the world. The Festival includes a Goat Parade, a Goat Cart Race, a Goat Beauty Contest and an ADGA-sanctioned Dairy Goat Competition, as well as live music, food, art and craft vendors, and lots of fun for the entire family.

29-30  ASHEVILLE   Asheville-Blue Ridge Rose Society Exhibit: The annual Asheville-Blue Ridge Rose Society Exhibition features award-winning roses of every color and size.  Experts will be on hand to answer questions and provide resources about selection, care and history of these beautiful garden plants.

19   DILLSBORO   Dillsboro Arts & Music Festival   All the quaint shops are open and the streets are lined with tents featuring artisans demonstrating all kinds of traditional crafts including basketry, weaving, quilting, pewtering, and carving. It's a walk-about day with a gracious plenty of food available in the restaurants or from the street.

10     SALUDA  47th Annual Coon Dog Day Festival   Come enjoy this homecoming event in downtown Saluda. What began as a chicken supper fundraiser for the local Coon Club has grown into an event that attracts over 10,000 people each year. Live music on stage begins in the morning around 9 and continues all day until the end of the street dance at 10:00 PM.
10-11 ASHEVILLE   American Bamboo Society SE Chapter 4th annual Bamboo Festival: The American Bamboo Society’s Southeastern Chapter hosts this extremely popular event which features bamboo nurseries offering living bamboo plants as well as artists and crafters demonstrating and selling their products. Visitors learn about the artistic value and functionality of this remarkable grass. The weekend includes lectures, demonstrations, crafts, and plant sales.
AUGUST
6-8  ASHEVILLE   Asheville Quilt Guild Annual Show: The North Carolina Arboretum hosts the Asheville Quilt Guild’s popular annual show, a juried event featuring more than 250 quilts of exceptional craftsmanship from across the U.S. and worldwide. 6   DILLSBORO   Western North Carolina  Pottery Festival   The annual festival celebrating the pottery of Western North Carolina takes place along Front Street. This juried event features the works of more than 20 highly-skilled potters from across the region. Potters on hand to demonstrate throwing and raku firing.
 
DECEMBER
3   BLACK MOUNTAIN   Holly Jolly Christmas  Street festivities and stores stay open late.
3-4, 10-11  DILLSBORO  Lights and Luminaries  Custom of lighting the way for the Christ child, more than 2,500 candles in small white bags line the streets and every storefront is aglow with Christmas lights and decorations. Shopkeepers hold "Open House" and serve coffee, warm cider, hot chocolate and home baked goodies and stay open late to accommodate holiday shoppers. Even Santa Clause fits a trip to Dillsboro into his busy schedule to listen to the children's gift requests.
10-11  SALUDA   Hometown Christmas   Main Street will be decked out in all its Christmas lights when hosting "Hometown Christmas." Sponsored by the Saluda Business Association, this long-standing tradition has become a way for Saluda residents to come together and celebrate the holiday season. Businesses and shops are open from 6-8pm and serve holiday refreshments while local musicians perform.
