Murphy North Carolina, the county seat of Cherokee County, has the distinction of being known as both the first and last town in North Carolina, depending on which way you're going, of course. Murphy NC combines a rich, interesting past with a strong promising future. Murphy began as an Indian trading post called Huntersville, then Huntington, and finally was named after Archibald D. Murphy, who was a state senator and an advocate of education in Western North Carolina.  Cherokee County, is a special place in the southwestern corner of North Carolina where the forested mountains touch the sky, the lakes sparkle, the air is crisp and clean, and the charm of small town America still exists.

CHEROKEE HERITAGE TRAIL. From the serene peaks of the Balsams to the muddy banks of the Little Tennessee River, Cherokee Heritage Trails wind through the southern Appalachians, telling the story of the Cherokee people, Ani-Kituhwa-gi, who once commanded all of the Southern Appalachians. Although most of the Cherokee were forcibly removed to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears in 1838, a small group remained in their homeland, becoming the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Today they own about 57,000 acres - the Qualla Boundary, a remnant of their ancestral lands. SHOP ONLINE.
CHEROKEE COUNTY MUSEUM. Featuring history of Cherokee County, the Museum has more than 2000 authentic artifacts of the Cherokee Indians on display. The museum reflects the life of the Cherokee Indian during the time of the Cherokee Nation before their removal along the "Trail of Tears" to Oklahoma. Also featured is a collection of more than 800 dolls, the oldest doll dating back around 1865.
