THE BLUERIDGE PARKWAY. At 469 miles long the Parkway is the nation's longest scenic rural parkway. Now 70 years old it is administered  by the  National Park Service and host to  approximately 20 million visits annually. It connects the Shenandoah Valley National Park with the Great Smokey Mountains National park in North Carolina and Tennessee. Along the route are opportunities for lodging, dining, camping, hiking and simply enjoying breathtaking views from easily accessible overlooks and picnic areas. World renowned for the diversity of its plant and animal life, the beauty of its ancient mountains, and the quality of its remnants of Southern Appalachian mountain culture, this is America's most visited national park. Clingman's Dome. At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is Great Smoky Mountains National Park's highest point. It is the highest point in Tennessee, and the second highest appalachian trailpoint east of the Mississippi. Only North Carolina's Mt. Mitchell (6,684 feet) rises higher. Clingmans Dome is a popular Park destination. Located along the state-line ridge, it is half in North Carolina and half in Tennessee. The peak is accessible after driving Clingmans Dome Road from Newfound Gap, and then walking a steep half-mile trail. A paved trail leads to a 54-foot observation tower. Clingman's Dome site.

Maggie Valley Opry House. Raymond and Shirley Fairchild have been operating the Maggie Valley Opry since 1988, featuring Bluegrass and Mountain Music. In 2000, The National Endowments for the Arts and The North Carolina Arts Council, in conjunction with the Blue Ridge Parkway and other multi-state partnerships and organizations, placed the Opry House on the “Blue Ridge Music Trail” a project that grew out of the Blue Ridge Heritage Initiative to help preserve and promote the music of the Appalachian Mountains.
