CASHIERS NC
FACTS:
*Cashiers is a "dry
town." Stores and restaurants are not allowed to sell alcohol. However,
most restaurants will allow you to "brown bag it" for a small fee.Beer and wine are available for sale in Highlands,
20 minutes away.
* Cashiers has a population of white squirrels - not as many as in
Brevard, but yes WHITE squirrels. While this may not help keep them from a
hawk's dinner, it sure helps on the highway. You might spot one by the
Crossroads Chronicle office or you can buy the next best thing from the
White Squirrel Shoppe online or in Brevard
NC
* Typically, more than 80 inches of rain each year falls in the Cashiers
North Carolina area.
* Downtown Cashiers is little
more than a crossroads, the junction of
U.S. 64 and North Carolina 107, and a
mile or so radius of antique shops,
high-end restaurants, and second-home clusters discreetly tucked into
the woods.
* Cashiers is an unincorporated village located in southern Jackson
County.
* Five properties near Cashiers are listed on the National Register of
Historic Places—Camp Merrie-Woode, the Church of the Good Shepherd, Fairfield
Inn, the High Hampton Inn Historic District, and the Mordecai Zachary
House.

Cashiers
North Carolina is a green valley 3,500 feet high surrounded by
mountains rising up to 5,000
feet, not the foothills, but the southern crest of the Blue Ridge
Mountains. For Cashier NC peaceful is definitely the best description for this
quiet mountain town, but boring is never on the menu. Far from the typical
resort shops and crowds, Cashiers is a charming community hosting vibrant festivals, antique shops, crafts, unique and palette
pleasing dining options, art galleries and more. Cashiers NC and
Sapphire
Valley blend almost seamlessly. Cashiers homes offer the rustic
elegance so popular for vacation and second homes. |

WHITEWATER
FALLS. Upper Whitewater Falls, located in the Nantahala
National Forest near Cashiers North Carolina, drops over 411 feet
and is the highest falls east of the Rocky Mountains. Lower
Whitewater Falls, located just across the border in South
Carolina, drops another 400 feet. The rugged terrain around
these two waterfalls remains wild and undeveloped. A paved,
wheel-chair accessible walkway leads from the parking lot to the
upper overlook which provides an excellent view of the upper
Whitewater Falls. A lower overlook is located at the bottom
of 154 wooden steps. Because of the difficult terrain
surrounding Whitewater Falls, visitors are urged not venture off
the established trails. |
CASHIERS
HISTORICAL SOCIETY.
The Mission of
the Cashiers Historical Society is to
foster public appreciation of the history of
Cashiers Valley and to preserve and protect
the historical and cultural character of the
community through its commitment to the
preservation of the Zachary-Tolbert House and
other historic resources. |
GORGES
STATE PARK.
Plunging waterfalls, rugged river gorges,
sheer rock walls and one of the greatest
concentrations of rare and unique species in the
eastern United States are found within Gorges
State Park. An elevation that rises 2,000 feet
in only four miles, combined with rainfall in
excess of 80 inches per year, creates a
temperate rain forest and supports a collection
of waterfalls. |

CASHIERS ARTISTS, ART GALLERIES |
KAREN
WEIHS.
She paints from inspiration found in both of the
Carolinas of scenes that move her. Her palette
continues to evolve with the richness of green,
violet and orange in which she finds a
counterbalance. She is always looking for ways
to make one color play against another rather
than merely being representative of what the eye
thinks it sees. Lately she has explored a more
figurative style but loves to explore anything
that is challenging. She sometimes uses realism
as a base for coloristic simple impressions,
which she calls intuitive paintings, having a
modern abstract feel. |
